The “fat epidemic”…

May 15, 2008 · 1 Comment

Last night, I was watching the news, ranting away about this topic and Will invited me to share my thoughts on his blog, so here I am. Perhaps he will be so kind as to add a link later on to my rant, I honestly couldn’t be bothered, I am a photographer, not usually one for writing, he’s the one with the talent and skills in this area.

Now back to the purpose of this blog/rant:

The world getting fatter!

What I don’t understand is why it is so difficult to understand why the world is becoming fatter by the day, especially in North America. Well, its simple to me- TIME!

This day in age you have two working parents for the most part, or a single parent trying to run a household on their own. Who has the ability to spend time cooking three meals a day like we used to??? Years ago, I spent the majority of time in the kitchen; cooking, preparing, freezing, yes even canning. Now I do well to prepare a base meal with the main ingredient consisting of something like canned cream of mushroom soup, and call that a home cooked meal. Gone are the days when I prepared home made cream of mushroom soup the day before to use in the recipe.

Now, I run to McDonald’s on my lunch break, throw a frozen pizza in the oven. Rather than preparing a fruit smoothie for my husband and children, I find myself spreading jam on bread or scooping ice cream from the freezer.

To me the “fat epidemic” is a result of an over worked society with no time to cook, prepare and go to the gym, we walk around exhausted and stressed just wondering how we will get from appointment to appointment the following day, what we will actually consume rarely crosses our minds, we just grab and go.

Maybe this sounds pretty backwards to all those feminists (Uh oh there I am using that word!) out there, but I for one miss the days of being barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen, doing what needs to be done, making a home. I wish sometimes I had the nerve to join an Amish community, since popping my whole family into a time machine is much less likely, so many mock their lifestyle, but maybe, just maybe, they are the ones who really get it.

Walk in my shoes?

May 14, 2008 · No Comments

Are you taking the proverbial?

Walk in your shoes for a few hours I would - even a day! So you got called a few names - live with it!

If you think you are having a tough day, may I propose you walk in my shoes for a few hours,” reads the opening line. “In my mind, it feels like ‘Dump on Al Month.”‘

I could point to a couple of places in the far east where the hundreds of thousands would willingly swop places. Get on a plane and go out there and help those people and then come back and ask people to walk in your shoes for a few hours.

You will get a hefty payout anyway, Christ!

I love politics - no, I mean, I REALLY LOVE politics.

After yesterday’s result - can you remember it now? Mrs Bill was given a win in W VA - with not one jot of surprise, but that was yesterday and 24 hours in politics is a very long time.

So, as for the maniacal laughter?

John Edwards brushed her win off with one speech! I watched his speech - and a good speech it was too, Lou he wasn’t being patronising! He was trying to give her [another] way out of the race. I watched her interview with Wolf Blitzer, too. Keep reading →

America racist?

May 14, 2008 · 2 Comments

Hillary Clinton won W VA - not that is was any surprise, not that anything about her dwindling campaign is a surprise. She won a state that a friend of mine calls bigoted.

He also tells the story of retiree Victoria Switzer, who was working the phone bank one night:

One caller, Switzer remembers, said he couldn’t possibly vote for Obama and concluded: “Hang that darky from a tree!”

Is she wrong? It seems not, not that CNN will come out and say it - after all they need to be as PC as possible in this day and age. Keep reading →

Canada is not connected

May 13, 2008 · No Comments

Tell me about it - but who do you blame? The government? You could, but they don’t want to get involved - where I would go is my old favourite K.I.S.S.

If you do keep it simple when you think about these things you know where the problem lies - with the telecommunications companies in Canada. Basically put - there is no competition so they can do as they wish, and that is something they do do very well.

Toronto is fine - it has just about everything that any company could give, but Canada isn’t just Toronto, though they would think that it is.

In the UK they are bursting at the seams with 25Mb Broadband (and that is getting faster with 99% of the country covered) - so many here in Canada are still on 56k dial up and being charged the same as that 25Mb, why?

Open the airwaves and phone lines to real competition!

I should change the name of this blog…

to something like - The Will Rhodes Cynic Page. Because - that is exactly what I am.

This story brought about a voluble “DUH!” as I read it. I cannot believe how dumb people can be sometimes - it really does amaze me. One of the Scary Movie’s Movie’s had on it, ‘I see Dumb people’ - quite apt!

Now you may ask why? Keep reading →

She has been recording for 25 years and is turning 50 years old this year. As I am a gentleman I won’t repeat that.

You can read her interview here.
