But AT&T said………

April 30, 2008 · No Comments

that the web is crashing due to video overload! Grrrrrrrr!!!!

The world wide web is “still in its infancy”, the web’s inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee has told BBC News.

He was speaking ahead of the 15th anniversary of the day the web’s code was put into the public domain by Cern, the lab where the web was developed.

The future web will put “all the data in the world” at the fingertips of every user, Sir Tim said.

“The web has been a tremendous tool for people to do a lot of good even though you can find bad stuff out there.”

Making the web free to use had a vital role in spreading its use worldwide.

Free to use!?!?!

He has my vote - and he invented the bloody thing!

If Hawaii becomes a kingdom…

April 30, 2008 · 5 Comments

Would that mean Obama wouldn’t be recognised as President of the US?

Correct me if I am wrong - but wasn’t he born in Hawaii?

Protest leader Mahealani Kahau said the group doesn’t recognize Hawaii as a U.S. state. Supporters planned to keep the protest peaceful and if evicted would return later, she said.

The group is one of several Hawaiian sovereignty organizations in the islands, which became the 50th U.S. state in 1959.

The palace, the official residence of the Hawaiian kingdom’s last two monarchs, is a major downtown tourist attraction.

Damn you YouTube!

There is no doubt that video is big on the net. But is it getting too big?

Ask AT&T and it will answer - yes.

Speaking in London in late April, Jim Cicconi, AT&T’s vice president of legal affairs, said the burgeoning amount of video would consume all the net’s bandwidth in two years.

At the moment, said Mr Cicconi, video makes up 30% of net traffic now and in two years will hit 80%. Add in the move to high definition video which is seven to 10 times more bandwidth hungry, he said, and you get a recipe for failure.

Mr Cicconi is not alone in making startling predictions about an imminent rise in the amount of data whizzing across the internet.

Well get with the program and use the money we pay you to get better servers!

If the ‘net goes down - the world will come to an END!

When is sex - not sex?

April 29, 2008 · 15 Comments

You would think that this was an easy one - the answer is when you don’t have it. But is that the case?

A new law - well part of a greater law is coming up for enactment in the UK Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill - that’s how you get contentious laws passed in the UK, add them to something that isn’t related. But that is by the by.

This law deals with what you can do in your own bedroom - or, indeed, look at or watch. If you are a person(s) who are into something a lot different than the recognised ‘normality’ in the act of sex - you can be prosecuted and sent to prison. Let me give you a definition:

An act which threatens or appears to threaten a person’s life
An act which results in or appears to result in serious injury to a person’s anus, breasts or genitals

What this law addresses is BDSM or sadomasochism. (more…)

More outrage?

If this wasn’t happening in the US - I would giggle a little - but it is, so I won’t.

People do say that the Americans don’t ‘get’ irony!

I think this will prove the world wrong.

“But I think it’s ironic that she charged Gov. Spitzer $2,000 for sex and she wants to charge me 10 million for taking some naked pictures of her,” Francis told CNN. “I feel like I’m getting a raw deal.”

CNN reports…

April 29, 2008 · 9 Comments

But Cyrus is 15.

Oh-Kay!

While people are having a hissy fit about a 15 year old girl having photographs taken - this is what irks me:

At a moment when she otherwise would have been relishing an amazing week — a deal for her memoirs (reportedly seven figures)

Yes - a FIFTEEN year old selling her memoirs! And some say the photographs are bad. My dear Lord - what has the US come to?

Where they live

April 28, 2008 · 4 Comments

A long time ago I was having a conversation with my dad. This conversation was about how life was in the British army during world war II. He did say it was hard. Not just the fighting - that was obvious - but it was hard living. You took rest when you could and you fought along side those who were with you.

You shaved in cold water, ate cold baked beans - and I won’t say what they had to do when the bathroom was needed. Dad used to joke quite a bit about what it was like fighting along side the Americans - some of the stories would literally make me scream with laughter. But one thing dad always said was that the American soldier was looked after. They had the best - even Turkey was flown in for thanksgiving and Christmas.

Some times, more often than not, in fact - they would share with their fellow warriors. (more…)

The 9/11 conspiracy?

April 27, 2008 · 3 Comments

When I get into a discussion with people on the net it does get me thinking. That thinking can go from something I saw many years ago to just a day or so ago - because it springs into my mind for some or no apparent reason.

One of the reasons I write, I suppose. From jumbled essence of nothing to the written word.

But a discussion that has been ongoing on this blog - in the Guns post got me to thinking why are the Americans so scared of the world around them? Is it because of indoctrination that the whole world is against them or is it something else - that, in turn, led me to thinking about September 11th - was that the real catalyst that set this paranoia off?

I remember the day surprisingly well. The surprise is that I normally take a day like that and place in the back of my mind and usually don’t visit again - unless provoked into thinking about it. (more…)
