Should she fight on?

May 7, 2008 · 55 Comments

I know that many in the blogosphere are saying that Hillary Clinton should drop out - others argue that it is the democratic thing for her to stay in and allow the people to choose their nominee - but why?

She is now, mathematically, out of the race. There is no way she can go on to win all the last six races with the required 70/30 split that she needs. Even if you take into account the Florida and Michigan results - disputed as they should be, she cannot win.

So is it a matter of humiliation or is it a dignified exit? I would choose the latter, but I am not her - I am an Obama supporter and always have been for such a long time.

But why do I say humiliation? She can fight as long as she wants - but Obama is going to win at least 2 of the remaining States, Montana and Oregon will go to him - what margin I wouldn’t like to say, but it will be high no doubt.

So I ask all those who are supporting her - ask her to bow out gracefully and pitch for the VP slot - that would mean a Democratic landslide!

Mrs Clinton should exit now, with still a little grace. Instead of hanging in there as a frustrated women who can’t get what she wants. This hurts more than the sniper fire she endured in the Balkans. The future of the mightiest country in the world should not be decided by the elderly (with due respect for them) or the rednecks (no respect whatsoever), but by the younger and better educated Americans.

  • steve // May 7, 2008 at 5:23 pm

That’s a very elitist comment alex. What makes someone a “redneck” anyways? The same person in Quebec would be a PQ member, and you’d be saying he is an intellectual, cultured, despite being exactly the same.

  • ila // May 7, 2008 at 5:40 pm

yes should fight on and never give up intil the end people dont like it because she a women she the best

  • Ben K // May 7, 2008 at 6:06 pm

I think she will stay in at least until WV and KY are done voting.

  • Brandon // May 7, 2008 at 6:22 pm

I think that Barack Obama getting 90+ percent of the African American vote is proof that there is a lot of racism towards whites in the black community.

  • Rick in Virginia Beach // May 7, 2008 at 6:50 pm

YES, she should fight on. I don’t know who the media thinks make up this “party base” of either party - although myself and most everyone I know generally votes Democrat, we aren’t official members of that or any other party. Hillary is still the only candidate with the experience to do the job well and the humanity to fight for the less advantaged in our nation (which includes most of us). I don’t know how much more plain we can make it, we will vote for Hillary but WILL NOT VOTE FOR OBAMA because we fear for the country. True, McCain will not do the best job for us, but it’s better than having an intern try to heal the world with a big hug and beautifully crafted speech.

  • Vote Hillary // May 7, 2008 at 7:42 pm

We will not tell her to bow out! Why you ask well the answer is simple(and i dont understand why Obama fans dont get it) Obama CAN NOT! WILL NOT, Beat Mcain in November! There is so much junk on Obama it is ridiculous,Hillary and the media have been gentle with Obama the Republicans WONT BE! And i for one giving my full support to Hillary if she loses to Obama will work my heart out for Mcain! Face it Obama fans your man has No acheivements in the senate he only has Rezko,Wright.Weatherman Ayers,Blagovich soon to be indicted Gov.of Illinois! His America HATING WIFE Michelle And many more Problems policy wise! • Hillary's Clever // May 7, 2008 at 8:18 pm

I’m not a Hillary Supporter but there is a reason she has spent $11.4 of her own money. Hillary is a very clever woman. She may lose the Democratic nomination but she will definitely be a strong Independent Candidate once she does. Perhaps she’ll grab Republican Ron Paul and just take the whole thing in November. Could happen.

  • Vote for Hillary // May 7, 2008 at 8:29 pm

With all due respect, Hillary really is the better candidate, there’s a certain amount of “to thine own self be true” in the mix here regarding who I will and who I won’t vote for.

She has a very good workable plan to get us a toehold against the trade imbalance and deficit among other issues. Good concrete stuff that if implemented will lead to increased savings and new American jobs among other benefits.

Obama talks a good game but the moment you put him face to face with actual concrete action that he can take now to help out people who are having problems making ends meet, he balks, makes stupid arguments and lame excuses.

There is also the teamsters issue which is part of a much larger pattern. The only change you’ll get with this guy will be corruption on an unprecedented level.

  • Greg in Tampa // May 7, 2008 at 8:55 pm

Seems there are still some who are totally disillusioned about Hillary being the better candidate. Dont let the fact the Mr. Obama ran a very honorable campaign, refusing to sling mud mislead you to think Hillary has been vetted. Rezko, Wright, Ayers….guilt by association at best. Clintons have a lot to answer for that leads back to THEM, not friends or associates. You forget this guy came to office in control of the House and Senate….and managed to lose it all before leaving office….American public was tired of him then, and from the polls, dont want her now! But i guess every one else is sleeping at the wheel

  • jackie // May 7, 2008 at 9:49 pm

As a young person, Barack Obama inspires me like no one political figure has since I’ve been alive. He’s the kind of person I read about in my history books that I’ve been waiting for. You older people had the Kennedys, FDRs, MLKs, etc. These people INSPIRED people. So much so that people had to DIE. Where the hell is my fireside chat? Who’s going to tell me it’s not what my country can do for me, but what I can do for my country? What the hell? Instead, we got some guy who doesn’t know where Korea is and is trying to foster a war to prepare for the 2nd coming. Great job, old people! Awesome work!

A president doesn’t do the dirty work, he makes his cabinet and administration do it. He doesn’t have experience. Well, I’ve had about enough of “experience” than I can handle. White men aren’t going to vote for him because he’s black. Well, no Democrat has won the white vote since LBJ and if voters are going to be haters, well, God help them. Obama says there’s hope for you too. That’s right, we STILL LIKE YOU YOU HATERS! I LIKE THE CRAP OUT OF YOU!

Every year, a big batch of young people get old enough to vote and so help me God, I will get out there and make sure every Democrat or potential Democrat in the country registers. And we’ll all be better for it because people die for our right and it’s about time that young Americans started thinking about their country instead of drooling over Britney Spears.

You can’t make everyone think the same thing, nor should they, but the party is going to come together and the GOP is scared. Look at them! Hey media - be part of history and listen to the man!

Obama’s smart! Don’t be scared! He’s inspirational! He’s going to change this country and, yes folks, he’s black!

    Congratulations America. You grew up.

OBAMA ‘08 AND WE’RE NOT SCARED OF YOUR RHETORIC MEAN GOP AND FAKE DEMS AND HORRIBLE CORPORATE MEDIA!

  • steve // May 7, 2008 at 9:53 pm

A little naive jackie? Obama is still a politician and is running due to ego and greed and entitlement, just like the other politicians. Getting into a frenzy over a sociopath isn’t the best way to live life.

It’s amazing that this race is being won by votes that we will not see in November. Where will Obama’s supporters be in Nov if he gets the nomination? The message of hope may bring people to vote in the primaries - but many think this is all they have to do. If anybody were to step back and really look at the qualifications between the candidates - there is no comparison. Hillary has the experience to run this country. McCain has the experience to run this country. If Hillary does not get the vote, I will vote McCain. I don’t care for messages of hope when there is no action to base such a message. I have heard the “theory of hope” since the Reagan administration. Women are still looked upon poorly and we have yet to live at the same standard as ANY man whatever his color or nationality. I am appalled by those who have pulled their support of Hillary and switched it to a man. If women do not step up for themselves - NO MAN WILL. Hillary is the best candidate. She will effect CHANGE for the working class. She will fight for women. I hope that Hillary does not take the VP position. Clearly, this move would show that women will always play second fiddle to a man. It’s time to rise up and be a proud strong woman and vote Hillary. Not only do we deserve it, but our daughters, and granddaughters need a future where they don’t find themselves making 60% less than a man or being passed over for promotions and opportunities….I with you Hillary all the way!

  • Mike // May 8, 2008 at 12:30 am

I have an idea — she should offer to Obama to split the cost of a re-vote in MI and FL. She’d win and solidify that she has the advantage in popular vote and big states needed to beat McCain.

  • Jamia // May 8, 2008 at 1:12 am

Democrats need to unite no matter who the nominee is.

  • abba // May 8, 2008 at 3:40 am

Lame people who cannot think for themselves! If your only reason for voting for Hillary is because you are a woman and she is a woman than you’re just as lame as lame can get. I am a woman but would never vote just based on gender. Character, judgment, leadership ability means so much more than whether someone has a putty or a deeeko!

  • abba // May 8, 2008 at 3:46 am

Also, haven’t you Hillary supporters ever thought — what good are all “these ideas” if SHE CANNOT GET a working majority in congress to PASS it?!?!?!?

Its just good ideas to get votes…. and you all fell for it. Her partisan attitude will get nothing done in Washington, except the same ole same ole!!!

Good ideas mean shhhTTT unless you can get others to agree and work with you. Thats something Hillary CANNOT DO!!

  • abba // May 8, 2008 at 3:48 am

If you’d rather vote McSame than Obama in November, then don’t complain when the republicans raise taxes on the middle and lower class, and cut taxes for big corporations & the rich.

That would be an in your face moment and I’d laugh at you all when you blog about it in one to two years!!!

    Don’t cry later.

  • abba // May 8, 2008 at 3:53 am

When the next supreme court overturns ROE v. WADE and a woman’s right to choose no longer exists, when your son, father, brother dies in IRAQ because you were bitter that Hillary wasn’t the nominee and McSame kept us in Iraq, when you can’t get healthcare for cancer treatments because McSame doesn’t believe in government getting involved with this issue, when your job gets shipped overseas because McSame gives tax breaks to corporations who ship jobs overseas, etc…etc… I could go on and on and on… my point is, if this is all worth voting for McSame because Hillary was not the nominee and you were “bitter” about it… then go ahead and vote for McSame…

I will have the last laugh and you would’ve wished you listened to abba.

  • steve // May 8, 2008 at 9:42 am

    abba:

Your first reason is abortion? Even many liberals realize it’s just bad law. I’m in favor of abortion, I think many should be mandatory, but there’s no constitutional reason for roe v. wade, it’s just a really really horrible decision. It’s going to be returned back to the states, some states will outlaw abortion, and some will not.

  • Eyeliner // May 8, 2008 at 10:00 am

Clinton should drop out now. Not only does she risk damaging the party, she is now putting her own credibility and political future on the line for a game she has already lost. She’s beginning to seem obsessive and irrational. Can’t she count? Most of the super-delegates have gone on record as stating they will not reverse the will of the people and pleged delegates. The party leadership is beginning to turn against her, since they cannot risk a fracture in the party now. If she forces their hands and they must publically denounce her, she can kiss her Senate seat goodbye. It is this stubborn refusal to acknowlege reality, combined with her disohonesty and blatant pandering, that turned me against Clinton. I now support Obama. I can understand her staying in through IN and NC. But she needed to beat Obama in both states by at least a 10% margin. She threw everything she had at him for three weeks. In the end, she barely beat him in a state that she had a 10 point lead just a week before the election. He trounced her in NC. This proves she is not electable and that her “PA momentum” was not momentum at all, but just a temporary bump.

  • Fred // May 8, 2008 at 10:17 am

Why should she drop out? She is by bar the better candidate and the one with more substance.
Had these primaries been held in a different order, then Clinton could easily be ahead. This is something the CNN pundits (so clearly biased for Obama) just don’t get when they claim to do the “math”. Many voters make up their minds at the last minute and often vote according to what they hear in the media. The timing of the primaries affects the vote. If N. C. or Indiana had held their primaries shortly after Wright’s speeches I predict Clinton would have won by a far greater margin in Indiana. As for N.C., given how the racial split appears in the exit polls I doubt much would have changed there no matter what outrageous comments Wright made.
I also don’t understand why superdelegates should abrogate their choice to the majority in any state or district. That has the effect of assigning delegates in different proportions than the popular vote in a state. If Obama’s supporters don’t want the rules changed to seat the Florida and Michigan delegations, how can they propose changing the rules for how superdelegates vote. There is a process in place and it should continue until one delegate has a majority.

  • aMY // May 8, 2008 at 10:30 am

I think this whole mess shows exactly why our country is the way it is. The democratic party can’t agree on anything. Let alone the entire working Government, Rep, Dems, Libs etc. If either Hilll or Obama they end up in office it will be a bigger mess now because it would be beneath this working government to agree on anything. I would like a box that says “None of the Above” I bet that wins the election.

  • paul john // May 8, 2008 at 10:36 am

I will certainly not vote for Hillary Clinton if the superdelegates decide to dismiss the fact that he’ll have more delegates in his corner and indeed have the popular vote. If this is the case, I’m going to vote Independent.

  • Gigi Hughes // May 8, 2008 at 10:50 am

If Sen. Obama was behind everyone would demand he get out of this race, It’s because she is White If she was black she would have been out of this race last month.

  • Frank // May 8, 2008 at 11:18 am

After all the whining over the years about every vote counting and the horrors of disenfranchising the electorate, does anyone else see the irony in Obama loving lackeys fighting to block two of the biggest most important “swing states” from counting in all this? It wouldn’t be because Hillary would win both of them handily?

  • Frank // May 8, 2008 at 11:24 am

    Gigi,
If Obama was white and associated with people one 10th as blatantly racist as Wright or Michelle Obama, he would have been out before thi even began. Don’t even try to make this about race-it’s just pathetic that you would even try.

  • Andrea Hackett // May 8, 2008 at 11:26 am

People always say Do the Math when talking about Hillary, so let’s do the math. Obama has 90 percent of the African-American vote, the young Democratic activist vote, and the left wing elitist vote. Hillary has the majority of working white men and women, including Reagan Democrats, seniors, and a high percent of poor whites. No matter how many delegates or superdelegates Obama gets, he can’t win the general election with that narrow support, especially when you consider Hillary supporters have pledged to vote Republican in unprecedented numbers. The divisive candidate here is Obama. If he wins the nomination, the Democratic Party will mire itself in an unelectable corner and its status a minority party will keep the White House out of reach.

  • Frank // May 8, 2008 at 11:30 am

Exactly. I had to laugh when I heard that McGovern was pushing her to get out. I suppose he wants to see history repeat.

  • Kay // May 8, 2008 at 11:57 am

Of course Obama is winning big….in primarily RED states. Republicans and joining ranks to ensure he wins since they know he can’t beat McCain. Folks…he is getting the black vote. Any Democrat worth their salt will get the majority there. In order for Democrats to win in November, they must have the black vote, middle white class voters and independents. That spells Hillary in my book! Superdelegates…you decide, but if you don’t step up and select Hillary, there will be lots of tears and “I told you so’s” come November. You can take THAT to the bank.

  • Democrat First // May 8, 2008 at 12:43 pm

“She is by bar the better candidate and the one with more substance.”

No, she isn’t she proved herself to be a liar and a cheater. She overstates her experience. The bulk of her experience has been as a wife of a politician and a background political operative. She has no reral policy-making experience. She flip-flops on issues and will say whatever the audience in front of her wants to hear. For example, she put herself out there in PA and IN as coming from working class roots (untrue; he father was quite wealthy by the time she was born). She was the hero of the working man. Yet, when she sat on the board of Wal-Mart, she screwed its employees by supporting the company’s anti-union policies, some of which are questionable from a legal standpoint. Clinton and Obama are almost identical in all policy issues. They are, after all, both Democrats and are holding the pary line. Yet Clinton supporters insiste on caying that Obama has no substance and that she is, threfore the better candidate. You can’t even see the illogic of this statement. If they are so much alike, if Obama is a stuffed shirt, then Clinton must also be a stuffed shirt. So in answer to your question, she should drop out because she has already lost this election. There is almost no real electoral math that gives the nomination to Clinton without a brokered convention. A brokered convention garauntees John McCain the general election and will destroy the gains made by the Democrats in Congressional and state races. So her continuing to fight, as Geo. McGovern said yesterday, is damaging the party. We can either be Conton supporters or Democrats. Our fellows have spoken and they clearly prefer Obama over Clinton. Now it’s time for us to unite behind Obama. If we don’t and soon, we’ll be watching from the sidelines for the next four years. Every day this battle goes on is another day John McCain has to define the the issues for the campaign before we even step up to challenge him. Every Democrat desires a spirited contest; it’s part of our political nature. But the contest is over. It’s time to get busy on winning this country back.

  • ReddHedd // May 8, 2008 at 1:09 pm

Obama haters should remember that McCain will continue to suck out economy dry by funding the 100 year war that he is willing to engage in, not to mention 0ver 4000 American lives that have been wasted thus far. I thought the Democrats were united to stop the war.
It also strikes me that many more Obama supporters would be willing to back Hiliary than vise versa. Does that mean that poor, uneducated, and /or elderly whites are less willing to stand up for our party, and would rather see another 8 years of Republican President? What shape will those same people be when our country goes bankrupt?

  • Al // May 8, 2008 at 1:33 pm

I’ve been a Democrat all my live since FDR, and I’ve seen this party lose what it suppose to stand for. This primary that we’ve seen is something just for the Blacks, and Obama will not get the White votes he will need to win in November. The people I’ve talked with are saying that if Obama get the nomination, they will not vote or will vote for McCain. This will split the party; we will have a “Black” Democratic party and a “White” Democratic party. We will end up with a three party system!

  • Will Rhodes // May 8, 2008 at 8:40 pm

    Via E-Mail

Not much has been made of Obama’s comments on March 20th regarding his grandmother. Yes, we’ve heard that he threw her under the bus, etc. But, I haven’t heard much about the “typical white woman” comment. Doesn’t this imply his own veiled racist and gender bias?

As a Hillary supporter (who can only get news on my candidate from Fox), if Hillary drops out of the race, I have a bumper sticker for my car — I’m not Obama’s “Typical White Woman” — and I will be voting for McCain to make my non-typical voice heard.

    Rose Lewis
    Louisville, KY

  • Nicolette // May 9, 2008 at 12:46 am

Never mind the whole sexism issue…it’s the race issue that’s been the ugliest thing in this whole primary.

I find this whole white vote/black vote issue ironic. For once in the history of this country a black guy is actually within shouting distance of the Presidency that everyone’s so concerned about whether he’s going to represent the interests of white people. Never mind the fact that the majority of the Congress is white…would be kind of hard to push through “black-only” issues without them.

Funny, I think that a lot of blacks, hispanics, and yes women may have also wondered if the President they’re voting for will represent their interests, seeing as every President in the history of this country was an old white guy and not hispanic, black, or a woman.

So Brandon…Barack getting 90%+ of the black vote means that they’re all racist towards white people? What percentage would be acceptable? 80%? 70%? 50%? Did we forget that the black vote was Senator Clinton’s to lose? Did we forget that 90% of the black vote once went to Bill Clinton? Did we forget that there was a debate over whether Obama was “black enough” for the black vote?

And by the way…it’s okay for women to vote for Clinton because she’s a woman and women need to “step up for women” but if a black person votes for Obama they’re racist against white people? (right Celeste?)

As for the “typical white woman” comment that supposedly implies that Obama’s a black supremacist in disguise (as well as being an American hating Muslim extremist because you know him attending that church is only to cover up the fact that he’s a closet Muslim…right? I’m serious, a friend of mine believes this). Had people listened to the entire comment in context with an open mind, they would see that Obama was trying to explain that even though his grandmother had a half black/half white grandson that she loved, she still had some of the same attitudes about black people that was common (or “typical” ;) for many white women of that day and age.

But the rationale I find the most ironic is that Clinton should get the nomination because Obama can’t get the “white vote”. So even though Obama is ahead in popular vote and pledge delegates…he shouldn’t get it because white people won’t vote for him…which includes those Clinton supporters (I’m assuming they’re white because all blacks are already voting for Obama, right?) that will defect to vote Republican…because?

If I sound angry it’s because I find this whole fight in the Democratic party ridiculous and it’s proving to me once again they don’t have the political will to win ANYTHING! Here we have two great smart and articulate candidates with very SIMILAR policies and we’re tearing the party apart because we’re so invested in getting our guy or gal into office that we’re willing to hand it over to a candidate that will continue the same miserable policies for the next four to eight years.

Right now I could care less who wins the nomination because the bottom line for me is that I don’t want McCain…but if we keep this up we might end up with him anyway. Democrats excel at shooting themselves in both feet as well as their arms and legs.

  • Ernie // May 9, 2008 at 1:00 am

The media has bent over backwards to kiss Obamas Black ass. He has VERY LITTLE experience, has ties to the nut Wright, has ties to Louis Farrakhan, went to Libya with Farrakhan, supports talking to terrorists directly, has an elitist attitude, when asked questions that are difficult does what every “black” person does that is racist, that is doesn’t answer the hard questions but RUNS AWAY from it. And it shows that black Americans can not think for themselves, but still have the tribal gang mentality, and that is “if he is black, we gonna stick together, even if it means jumping off a cliff together” I will vote for McCain if Obama gets nominated, and if America puts him in office, it is following Biblical prediction, IE 2 Timothy 4:3

  • Ernie // May 9, 2008 at 1:07 am

Mathmatically Obama can’t win either. And it shows nothing but some of the “superdelegates” are TRAITORS to the democratic party, since they have voted against what their constituients wanted, but decided to vote on their own. It also shows that most Americans are not that educated apparently, since they have ignored the facts that I have mentioned in the previous post. I do believe you will see Obamas “true colors” if he gets the presidency. God help America if that racist elitist gets elected !

  • Ernie // May 9, 2008 at 1:15 am

Anybody who SUPPORTS , VOTES FOR, OR FOLLOWS Obama, shows that they do NOT LOVE AMERICA, but want to see it be taken over by Muslim extremists. It is hard for me to believe that so many Americans, especially those that claim to be “educated” have their head up their ass and cannot see that Obama is nothing but a black racists who is nothing but a puppet of Wright and Farrakhan. Man, and here I thought America had made strides in becoming an “enlightened” country. Man, I was mistaken !

  • Ernie // May 9, 2008 at 1:17 am

Steve, your doing it again. Just stay quiet, man, and stay in school.

On another note, what is with this experience argument?

How many great leaders would we have given up if we used the same experience argument that McCain and Clinton (who are showing very similar views these days) are using?

Washington, Lincoln, both Roosevelts, Truman, Ike, Kennedy -even Hillary’s husband had less experience than Obama!

Ronald Reagan also had little experience, but I don’t count him as a leader, he was just a smooth talking dirt bag that got us in the same goddamn predicament we’re in now: a record debt and a poor economy.

  • Ernie // May 10, 2008 at 5:33 am

  • lunawolf // May 10, 2008 at 9:54 am

Reagan was like the guy who waits until two people have been fighting so long, they are both weak, and then goes in for the kill. The USSR was already on it’s way out. What we should learn from Russia is that endless war and conflict drains a country to the point of disaster. Fighting in the Balkans and in the Middle East really took its toll. All Reagan did was say, “Tear down this wall, ” after it was already being torn down by the Berliners (the people, not the pastry). Reagan had chance opportunities to use the media to make himself look better than he was.
