Not wanting to be hard on John McCain - because he does make it so easy to do - the GOP are going to have a fight on their hands making him look like he has something to offer the American people, other than pie-in-the-sky ruminations of the improbable!
Some are now coming out to say that his crystal ball predictions are something akin to a children’s fantasy book, much like Aladdin. If he keeps hoping then I am sure that the hope he projects will stop some of the American troops in Iraq from being killed - or maybe not.
So what are people saying about his now infamous quirk on Thursday?
Some analysts said the speech was unusual, and somewhat risky, in that it laid out benchmarks on which he could be judged.
Personally I think he has been judged already - and that judgement isn’t kind.
“It certainly was an ambitious speech,” said Bill Schneider, a CNN senior political analyst, noting that many of the things McCain mentioned will be “very tough things for a president to accomplish.”
“But perhaps the key point that he made was the tone and tenor of his presidency when he said near the end of his speech, ‘If I’m elected president, the era of the permanent campaign will end. The era of problem solving will begin,’” Schneider said.
OK - I will pretend that I can make some sense out of that.
“There still has not been a major terrorist attack in the United States since September 11, 2001,” McCain said in Thursday’s speech.
It is something that Bergen believes is more plausible.
“The American public is more vigilant … The United States government has made it safer. It’s harder to get into the U.S. if you’re a terrorist. Al Qaeda isn’t the same organization it was on September 11 of 2001, even though it has resurged recently,” he said.
Seems logical enough and not that hard to proclaim as part of campaign. After all you have to look back at the attacks by Muslim extremists before that fateful day in 2001. That should give people an indication of the regularity of these attacks, especially on home soil. Vigilance is always needed in this times, all countries should be on their guard.
On a much lighter note - I would love to see John McCain as president arguing the toss in Congress with the leader of the opposition, whomever that would be. But does the American system of government give leave for that? Not to my understanding but a good verbal bloodbath would be fun and great TV.
Maybe John McCain is hankering back to the days of colonialism - when the Crown of Britain rested on that nation. Or, and much more plausible, he wishes to get back to a much more form of representative government for the people of the USA.
Now THAT would be a vote winner!
